Thank You Card Etiquette

"Did you write those thank you notes Lauren?"

Those were the words of my mother after any event that we received gifts.

I remember when thank you cards were a must...and not just a thank you for the gift, but a real thank you card expressing gratitude for the specific gift that was received.

As I was writing the thank you cards for Matilda's first birthday gifts she received, I was so specific with the words that I wrote.  I wanted each and every person to know how thankful we were for their thoughtful gift as well as for their time spent with us at the celebration.

There is nothing nicer than walking out to the mailbox and finding a handwritten note.  As you open it you can see the detail and dedication that was put into the writing.  I love reading heartfelt messages!

I often wonder what has happened to note writing etiquette? Did this get lost somewhere? Does our society feel like we do not need to be polite anymore?  I am just simply confused...

So lets break down some thank you writing etiquette...

* address the envelope with the recipients proper name
* use a proper heading....
                                         Dear Mr.
                                         Dear Mrs.
                                         Dear Aunty Saly,
                                         Dear Uncle Ryan, Aunty Coley and Cousin Landon,

* when writing a thank you include specifically what you are thankful for as well as including a heartfelt message.

                                                 Thank you so much for the beautiful blue dress.  I can't wait to be able to wear it!  Thank you for taking the time to come celebrate my birthday with me.  It was so great catching up with you.  I can't wait to see pictures of your trip once you get back.

                                                  Thank you for the birthday gift.  I can't wait to be able to use the gift card.  We were sad that you were not able to make it to the celebration, but please know that you were in our thoughts.  We can't wait until we are able to see you at the family reunion later this month.

* use a proper closing...
                                      XOXO Lauren
                                      Love you,
                                      Thank you again,

* make sure to send the thank you cards out sooner rather than later... I try to get mine out within a week of receiving a gift.  If you are ordering thank you cards that contain a picture I would recommend ordering them before and then personalizing them with your written thank you so you can still send them out within the proper time.

Now go and get to writing!!!!
